CENTIFOLIA

Centifolia roses are usually very lax shrubs, so plan accordingly.  My Fantin Latour is placed near the edge of a 1 foot wall where it can casually spill over.  I think Fantin Latour is the prettiest and tidiest of the Centifolia roses (maybe that's why I grow it?)  For you Latin buffs, the name translates to 100 petals.  And indeed, each bloom appears to have at least 100 petals.

FANTIN LATOUR  Very old with abundant, gorgeous, fully double blooms.  Looks best when you let it spill over.  It's famous as the "Cabbage Rose" pictured in many an old Renaissance painting.  It makes a fine relaxed shrub in the landscape.  If you want it neater, cage and/or prune it.  Health is G

POMPON DE BOURGOGNE  An unusual rose for this class given its compact tidy growth.  A stiff stemmed plant with small plum-colored pompom blooms.  It's very old; pre 1664.  Being so old, many different names have become attached to it, the most common being R. centifolia parvivolia.  Health is VG
